Balayage VS Highlights

When it comes to hair coloring techniques, Highlights and Balayage are two popular options. They both involve lightening the hair, but they different in application and the resulting look. In this blog post, we will explain what highlights and Balayage are, how they are applied, and the differences between the two!

BALAYAGE

Balayage is a French hair coloring technique that involves painting hair lightener onto the hair in a sweeping motion to create multi-tonal texture and face framing illumination. Balayage is typically applied to the ends of the hair and gradually lightens towards the roots. This creates a soft, natural-looking blend of color that is perfect for creating a sun-kissed look.

Balayage can be applied to any hair color, and is a great option for those who want a low-maintenance look. Because Balayage creates a natural-looking blend of color, it does not require as much upkeep as other hair coloring techniques.

HIGHLIGHTS

Highlights are a hair coloring technique that involves lightening strands of hair to create a multidimensional, lighter look. Highlights can be applied to any hair color and are achieved by separating sections of hair and applying bleach or hair lightener. The lightener is then wrapped in foil or plastic to prevent it from touching the other sections of hair. Once the lightener has been left on for the desired amount of time, it is washed out and a toner is applied to create the final look.

Highlights can be subtle or bold, depending on the thickness of the sections of hair and the contrast between the base color and the highlights. They can be applied throughout the hair or just on the top layer for a natural, sun-kissed effect.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES?

While both highlights and Balayage can create a natural-looking, sun-kissed effect, there are some key differences between the two techniques. Here are some of the main differences to consider:

  1. Application method: Highlights use foils to separate the hair and apply the color, while Balayage is a freehand technique where the color is painted onto the hair.

  2. Placement: Highlights can be placed throughout the hair, including the roots, while Balayage is typically placed on the mid-lengths and ends of the hair.

  3. Contrast: Highlights create a more noticeable contrast between the base color and the lighter sections, while Balayage creates a more subtle, natural-looking effect.

  4. Maintenance: Balayage requires less maintenance than highlights, as the color is applied more subtly and grows out more naturally. You only need to do at least twice in a year, and best to do glossing or toner every 6 weeks to keep your hair tone vibrant. Where Highlights requires more regular touch ups at least every 8 weeks because of your hair regrowth might be visible during that period.

WHICH TECHNIQUE IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

Deciding between highlights and Balayage depends on your personal preferences and hair type. Here are some factors to consider when deciding which technique is right for you:

  1. Desired effect: If you want a more noticeable contrast between your base color and the lighter sections, highlights may be the better choice. If you prefer a more subtle, natural-looking effect, Balayage may be the way to go.

  2. Hair type: Balayage is a great option for those with fine hair, as it creates the illusion of more volume and depth. Highlights can be a better choice for those with thick or coarse hair, as they create a more noticeable contrast.

Understanding the differences between the two techniques can help you decide which one is right for you. Whether you choose Balayage or Highlights, be sure to work with a professional stylist to achieve the best possible results!
